Our History - Coimbatore Vizha

Since its inception from 2009, Coimbatore Vizha has grown from strength to strength over the years. Coimbatore Vizha has always been about the people of our city and highlighted the culture of our region. Every year the team always encouraged organisations in our city to come forward and celebrate various aspects of our city. So it could be a kolam in front of your house depicting Coimbatore, an art class where students draw our city's monuments, music shows, dance shows and so much more. This is the aspect that has helped foster and nourish it. So every citizen, every organisation, every institution can celebrate Coimbatore Vizha in their own unique way.

All of this has been possible with the support of the District Administration, Coimbatore Corporation and Police Department. Over the years we have partnered with more than 500 organisations who have organised more than 750 events. Since the tenth edition iconic events like the Double Decker Bus, Taste of Coimbatore, Art Street, Cultural Parade, Marathon, Royal Boat Show, Symphony By The Lake (Laser Show), Wings of Change, Sangamam, Coimbatore Science and Technology Fest and many more have left their impression in the minds of the people.

A glimpse into a few events that we have conducted over the years!!

2023

Coimbatore Vizha 2023, held from January 4th to 8th, was a vibrant week celebrating the city's spirit. This 15th edition offered a smorgasbord of events showcasing Coimbatore's culture, heritage, and community.

With fountain of dreams lighting up the Valankulam lake, foodies flocked to Unavu Sangamam by the lake, tantalized by over 50 stalls from local restaurants and having range of local products displayed. Athletes pounded the pavement in the Coimbatore Marathon's 5km, 10km, and 2.5km walk categories. Singers, dancers, musicians, and magicians dazzled in the "Coimbatore Got Talent" competition. Melodies filled the air during Neighborhood Music Nights, with bands and karaoke clubs performing across the city. Art exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, and other cultural events rounded out the festival's offerings. Coimbatore Vizha 2023 was a resounding success, attracting thousands and leaving everyone with a taste of Coimbatore's unique charm.
2022

The 14 th edition of Coimbatore Vizha was held between the 9 th and 17 th of April 2022. Usually held in the month of January this edition was postponed due to the Covid wave. True to the spirit there were many events with the cynosure of all eyes being the Symphony by the Lake, a sound and light water screen laser show for the first time in Coimbatore.

The Coimbatore Vizha Team has organised Symphony by the Lake, a grand Celebration symbolising the Spirit of Kovai at the Valankulam Lake. A little-known fact about Coimbatore is that the city has 7 beautiful lakes. To Celebrate these Lakes and the beauty around them, the Vizha team organised Coimbatore’s First-Ever Water Screen Laser, Sound and Light Show – “Symphony by the Lake”. Aptly titled Netru-Indru-Naalai, a special video was put together to chronicle Coimbatore over the past centuries, and our way forward. Many people came forward to watch this special show on a water screen. With more than six shows daily, this event was talked about long after it was over.
2021

The 13 th edition of Coimbatore Vizha was held between the 2 nd and 10 th of January 2021. This was the year of Covid but with vaccines around the corner this Vizha was all about hope and honouring the heroes who supported us during the first wave of the pandemic. Most events went virtual and Chippy wore a mask but the spirit of the people as they celebrated our city did not deter.

Our frontline workers had risked their lives and worked round the clock treating patients, ensuring lockdown was enforced effectively and took care of sanitisation in our city. Thanks to their efforts, the vulnerable population received utmost care and a lot of lives were saved. This was the time to say a BIG thank you to them as their dedication, commitment and courage had helped us through tough times. Sponsors came forward and treated frontline workers for a flower shower and helicopter rides of our city. There were nurses, ambulance drivers, doctors, sanitary workers, corporation staff and many more who got this once in a lifetime opportunity and were very thankful for it. The excitement on their faces knew no limits and it warmed all our hearts.
2020

The 12 th edition of Coimbatore Vizha was held between the 3 rd to 12 th of January 2020. It started with a grand launch in Prozone Mall. Coimbatore Vizha was a well anticipated event by the residents by this time and to meet up to their expectations we had an equally grand launch. Many celebrated guests were invited to honour the event, one among them was the singer Mr. Sathyaprakash along with Raj Melodies.

The event was a huge success and gave a great boost as the commencement of the 12 th edition of Vizha. This was also the year of the Royal Boat Show where we joined with the Indian Navy to sail, Sail Boats in our celebrated lakes for the first time.
2019

The 11th edition of Coimbatore Vizha was held between 4 th -12 th of January 2019. It featured 103 partners and 150 events. Key events included the Double Takkar Bus, Eat Street, Coimbatore Vizha parade, Art Street, Open quiz, Heritage car show, Movie festival, Heritage walks, Coimbatoer Science and Technology Fest and Sporting events.

Double Takkar was Coimbatore’s first ever double decker open top bus ride in 2018. This year it was double the fun with two buses. By hopping on to Double Takkar, citizens of Kovai were able to see so much more of Coimbatore. They were able to sit back and embrace the city views from top of the bus. There were different routes available – something for everyone in Coimbatore whether you are into history, art, fashion, architecture – the list goes on!
